Description

This test reflects the current Borrelia miyamotoi activity of chronic and recent Borrelia miyamotoi infections.

Borrelia miyamotoi, a type of bacteria transmitted by ticks, causes a disease known as Borrelia miyamotoi disease (BMD). The symptoms of BMD can be like those of Lyme disease, which is caused by a different Borrelia species.

The EliSpot is highly sensitive and can detect even one single Borrelia miyamotoi-reactive T-cell. With detection levels that can be as low as one cell in 100.000, the EliSpot is one of the most sensitive cellular assays available.

Methodology

Borrelia miyamotoi EliSpot (T-Cell-Spot / IGRA: Interferon-Gamma-Release Assay)

When should I use

When a recent or chronic case of Borrelia miyamotoi disease (BMD) is suspected

Other details

AONM have checklists that help identify the most likely viral or bacterial infections to test for, based on patient symptoms. Please see https://aonm.org/checklists-for-testing/  or contact AONM at 03331 210305 or email info@aonm.org. The EliSpot can be helpful when monitoring therapies. The EliSpot should usually become negative about 4 to 8 weeks after the completion of an effective therapy.

The primary symptoms of Borrelia miyamotoi infection include:

  • Fever and Chills: Recurrent episodes of high fever, often accompanied by chills.
  • Headache: Severe headaches are common.
  • Fatigue: Persistent fatigue and weakness.
  • Muscle and Joint Pain: Aching muscles and joints.
  • Nausea and Vomiting: Some individuals may experience gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • Dizziness: Light-headedness or dizziness can occur.

Unlike in Lyme disease, the erythema migrans rash (the characteristic "bull's-eye" rash) is typically absent in Borrelia miyamotoi infections.
