Description:
This test reflects the current activity of Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) in chronic and recent infections.

Herpes Simplex Virus (human herpesvirus HHV1/2) (always intercellular), double-stranded DNA virus, one of the herpes viruses.

The EliSpot is highly sensitive and can detect even one single HSV-1 or HSV-2-reactive T-cell. With detection levels that can be as low as one cell in 100,000, the EliSpot is one of the most sensitive cellular assays available.

HSV 1 + 2 EliSpot (T-Cell-Spot / IGRA: Interferon-Gamma-Release Assay)

When should I use:
When a recent or chronic case of HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection is suspected.

The EliSpot should usually become negative about 4 to 8 weeks after completion of an effective therapy.

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1):

• Description: HSV-1 is primarily associated with oral herpes but can also cause genital herpes. It typically results in cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth.
• Symptoms:
• Cold Sores: Painful blisters on the lips or around the mouth.
• Fever: Low-grade fever may accompany the sores.
• Sore Throat: Irritation or pain in the throat.
• Swollen Lymph Nodes: Particularly in the neck area.
• Fatigue: Generalised tiredness and weakness.

Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2):

• Description: HSV-2 is primarily associated with genital herpes but can also cause oral herpes. It typically results in sores or blisters in the genital area.
• Symptoms:
• Genital Sores: Painful blisters or ulcers in the genital or anal area.
• Painful Urination: Burning sensation during urination.
• Itching or Irritation: In the genital area.
• Swollen Lymph Nodes: Particularly in the groin area.
• Fever and Flu-like Symptoms: Including headache, muscle aches, and fatigue.

Significance of Testing Both HSV-1 and HSV-2:

• Differentiation: By testing for both HSV-1 and HSV-2, the EliSpot can help differentiate between infections caused by either type, which is important for appropriate treatment and management.
• Monitoring: Understanding whether the infection is active or chronic can guide treatment decisions and help monitor the effectiveness of therapies.
